These are the results of my last attempt to install the Ubuntu distribution, the 32-bit “Ubuntu Desktop Edition” also known as “Karmic Koala”, on my HP Compaq 6730s notebook PC.
Notes:
- Guided installation using 32-bit Desktop Alternate CD. (OK)
- Multiboot with Windows 7 not tested. (N/A)
- VirtualBox with Windows 7 loaded not tested. (N/A)
- After installation Ubuntu will ask to manually activate the proprietary (not open source) driver for the wireless LAN.
Choose the Broadcom STA driver. (OK) - Wireless LAN and bluetooth connections worked without any problems using the above Broadcom STA driver.
Reset of to BIOS defaults was required (eventhough BIOS read device enabled) in order to (re)enable the bluetooth device again that I previously had disabled using the HP software for Windows. (OK) - No problems accessing files on Windows shared folder in LAN. (OK)
No problems transferring files from LAN to laptop (OK)
File transfer from laptop to LAN not tested (N/A)
- Complete removal of all game packages using the Synaptic Package Manager (Ubuntu) worked without any problems. (OK)
- Running Update Manager (Ubuntu) on all packages to download newer versions of installed applications worked without any problems.
3rd Party repositories need to be added for Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice upgrades. (OK) - Windows fonts package installed separately without any problems.
Choose ttf-mscorefonts-installer. (OK)
- Playing AVI movie files with subtitles (srt, sub, etc.) only partially tested.
Necessary to install SMPlayer and ubuntu-restricted-extras packages. (OK)
Subtitles work, but I’m not happy with the “out-of-the-box” results; configuration of font-size and positioning needs further investigation. (NOK)
Connection to LCD TV with 1360×768 resolution works, but I loose the video image (not the audio) as soon as I close the lid of the laptop; also this needs further investigation. (NOK) - Playing DVD discs not tested. (N/A)
- Playing MP3 and WMA music files not tested. (N/A)
- Photo/slideshow presentations not tested. (N/A)
