windowsWhen trying to share only a single subfolder in [drive]:\Users\[user] (for instance C:\Users\JohnDoe\Downloads) the entire Users folder actually gets shared.

Note: This strange behavior with simple file sharing exists both in Windows Vista as in Windows 7.

To correct the situation remove the share from the Users folder:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, right-click the Users folder and select Properties (do not select Share)
  2. Click Sharing > Advanced Sharing, then remove the flag on Share this folder
  3. Click OK and Close.

To share only the desired Users subfolder follow the same path:

  1. Using Windows Explorer, right-click the folder in Users that you wish to share and select Properties (do not select Share)
  2. Click Sharing > Advanced Sharing, then flag Share this folder
  3. Click OK and Close
