HTTP error 500 when uploading images to WordPress

I ran into “http error 500″ while using the flash upload to get images from my PC into WordPress.
In order to fix this I needed to create/update the .htaccess file with the following:
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
